Frequently Asked Questions – Industrial Valves
Industrial valves are mechanical components used in pipeline systems for the control, isolation, regulation, and protection of liquids, gases, and other media. They are the link between pipeline sections and the process – an indispensable part of every process plant.
Depending on requirements, valves perform different functions:
Depending on requirements, valves perform different functions:

Choosing the right valve depends on several factors: medium, operating pressure, temperature, actuation frequency, and installation space. Here is a concise overview of the most common valve types:
- Ball valve – ON/OFF, full bore, quarter-turn: Ideal for frequent rapid shut-off of water, gas, oil, and clean media. Compact, tight, low maintenance. Not suited for sustained throttling. DN8–DN300.
- Butterfly valve – space-saving, large nominal sizes: Preferred for large pipe diameters DN25–DN1200 and where face-to-face length is limited. More economical than ball valves at large DN. DVGW-certified for drinking water and gas available.
- Gate valve – full bore, infrequent operation, drinking water/gas: Very low pressure drop in the open position. Optimal for pipelines that are seldom operated and wherever DVGW certification is required.
- Globe valve – throttling, steam, frequent actuation: The choice for frequent operation and adjustable flow. Particularly suited to steam, oil, gas, and aggressive media at high pressures and temperatures (up to ASME Class 600).
- Knife gate valve – solids, slurry, wastewater: The only valve that reliably handles solid-laden, viscous, or abrasive media. Flush bore prevents media build-up.
- Needle valve – fine metering, high pressure, gas/instrumentation: For precise stepless flow and pressure control, instrument isolation, and high-pressure applications.
Material selection is critical for valve service life, sealing integrity, and operational safety. FERGO offers valves in all common industrial materials:
- Stainless steel (1.4408/CF8M, 1.4301, 1.4305, 1.4571) – The universal material for demanding applications: corrosive media, food and pharmaceutical processes, drinking water, steam, and outdoor installations. Available across butterfly valves, ball valves, strainers, sight glasses, needle valves, and many more.
- GGG40 / GGG40.3 (ductile iron) – For large nominal sizes and high mechanical loads with water, gas, and wastewater. DVGW-certified for drinking water and gas. Standard in butterfly valves, gate valves, and PFA-lined valves.
- Brass (CuZn39Pb3) – Classic material for building services, heating, and general water/gas applications. Cost-effective and easy to machine.
- Carbon steel (1.0460, ASTM A105) – For high pressures and temperatures in process, energy, and chemical industries. Basis for many globe valves, steam traps, and gate valves.
- PFA lining (on GGG40.3 body) – Universal chemical resistance: HCl, HF, sulphuric acid, alkalis, aggressive solvents, and high-purity media where stainless steel reaches its limits. Flowserve Atomac/Durco. Full range at PFA valves.
- Duplex / special alloys – For extreme corrosion conditions (seawater, chloride-bearing media, offshore) in ball valves.
Industrial valves must meet strict standards depending on the application. The FERGO range covers the most important certifications:
- DVGW (drinking water and gas) – DVGW-certified valves for drinking water and gas installations to German requirements. Available in butterfly valves, ball valves, and gate valves.
- TA-Luft / VDI 2440 – Minimised leakage to TA-Luft requirements for plants handling emission-relevant media. Available in bellows-sealed globe valves and gate valves.
- AD2000 / ASME pressure equipment – Pressure equipment certification for high-pressure applications. Relevant for globe valves and gate valves.
- PED (Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU) / CE – European conformity for pressure equipment; vacuum breakers also comply with UK Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations.
- Fire Safe – Sealing integrity in the event of fire. Available for selected globe valves.
- ATEX (on request) – Explosion-protected actuator versions for hazardous areas; available for ball valves, butterfly valves, and PFA valves.
Yes – FERGO supplies valves as manual versions or fully automated assemblies. Automation is achieved via standardised actuators mounted directly onto the valve:
- Pneumatic quarter-turn actuators – Double-acting (DA) or single-acting/spring-return (SA) for compressed-air-controlled systems. ISO 5211 interface for direct mounting on all FERGO rotary valves (butterfly valves, ball valves, plug valves). ATEX-rated versions available. Controlled via NAMUR solenoid valves.
- Electric part-turn actuators (J4C) – Compact ISO 5211 actuators for PLC-controlled and remote-controlled systems. Multi-voltage 24–240 V AC/DC, 20–300 Nm. Position feedback via Switchmaster limit switch box or inductive sensors.
- Pre-assembled complete sets – FERGO supplies valve and actuator pre-assembled and tested as a ready-to-install unit, reducing installation effort and shortening commissioning time.
- Actuated globe valves – Selected globe valves are available with electric or pneumatic actuators and regulating cones for continuous flow control.
Stainless steel is a versatile and proven valve material – but it has its limits. PFA-lined valves are the solution when stainless steel reaches its chemical resistance boundary:
- Hydrohalic acids (HCl, HF) – Hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid attack stainless steel severely. PFA resists both acids at virtually any concentration.
- Concentrated sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and mixed acids – At high concentrations or temperatures, stainless steel can corrode; PFA remains stable.
- Strong alkalis (NaOH, KOH) at high concentrations – PFA is alkali-resistant without any compromise to the body structure.
- High-purity media / semiconductor industry – Where metallic contamination from stainless steel itself is unacceptable (UHP water, high-purity process media), PFA provides an absolutely inert surface.
- Frequently changing or unknown media – PFA's near-universal chemical resistance makes it the safest choice when media composition varies.
