Butterfly Valves for Industry & Building Services: The Universal Shut-off Solution for Your Pipeline

You need a reliable, economical, and space-saving shut-off for your piping system? Whether in the chemical industry, potable water supply, or modern building services – choosing the right valve is crucial.

The butterfly valve has established itself as the first choice here. Its simple and robust principle – a rotating disc that moves out of the flow path with a quarter-turn (90°) – makes it an indispensable workhorse. It offers an optimal compromise between functionality, compactness, and cost, especially for medium to large nominal sizes.

However, one butterfly valve for the pipeline is not the same as another. The optimal choice depends heavily on the medium, environmental conditions, and the desired level of automation. Are you looking for a corrosion-resistant stainless steel butterfly valve for aggressive media, a certified butterfly valve for gas or potable water, or a fully automated butterfly valve for your process control?

At FERGO, you will find the technically and economically perfect solution from over 1,000 models, with expert advice and fast availability.

From Housing to Actuator: How to Configure Your Perfect Butterfly Valve

A butterfly valve is a system. Its performance is defined by the combination of housing material, seal, and actuator. Each component plays a crucial role in the longevity, safety, and efficiency of your pipeline.

1. The Housing: The Robust Shell

Choosing the right housing material is the foundation for the durability and service life of your butterfly valve.

  • Ductile Iron (GGG40) For standard applications – extremely stable and cost-effective. The first choice for general industrial applications with water, air, or neutral media.

  • Stainless Steel (1.4408 / AISI 316) The first choice where corrosion is an issue – whether from the medium or an aggressive atmosphere. The standard for food, pharmaceuticals, outdoor chemical applications, or seawater.

2. The Seal: The Heart of the Valve

The seal (liner) determines which medium you can safely convey. It is in direct contact with the process medium and is crucial for tightness. Our portfolio covers all common requirements:

  • EPDM The all-rounder for heating, cooling, and potable water in building services. Resistant up to 120°C. Ideal for warm water, steam, and mild chemicals.
  • NBR (Nitrile) Ideal for mineral oil-based media such as hydraulic oils, fuels, or coolants. Good resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons.
  • FKM (Viton®) Offers excellent chemical resistance for more demanding industrial processes. Resistant to a wide range of chemicals, oils, and elevated temperatures.
  • PTFE (Teflon®) Almost universally chemical-resistant. The first choice for aggressive acids, alkalis, and solvents. Offers excellent sliding properties.

3. The Actuator: Manual or Automated?

The actuation is purely a matter of preference and requirements. Choose the method that best fits your process and level of automation.

  • Manual Actuator A simple lever or handwheel gear is sufficient for occasional manual operation. The most direct, economical, and reliable solution where no automation is needed.
  • Electric Actuator For integration into modern control systems, electric actuators are the solution – they can be precisely controlled and provide position feedback. Perfect for automation and remote control.
  • Pneumatic Actuator The champions for fast cycling and the safe choice in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX). Available in single-acting (spring-return) or double-acting variants.

Configuration Tip

Combine the components based on your medium, process conditions (pressure, temperature), and the desired level of automation. Our technical support is happy to help you select the optimal butterfly valve for your pipeline.

Frequently Asked Questions – Butterfly Valves

FERGO carries a comprehensive range of butterfly valves to cover virtually every industrial and building services application. The main subcategories are:
  • Fergo Butterfly Valves – Standard wafer and lug butterfly valves (AK200/AK201) in ductile iron GGG40 with stainless steel disc, available in EPDM, NBR, FKM/FPM, and PTFE seat materials, DN25 to DN1200, PN6/10/16 and ANSI Class 150.
  • Stainless Steel Butterfly Valves – Full stainless steel body and disc for corrosive media, food, pharmaceutical, and outdoor applications.
  • DVGW Butterfly Valves – Certified valves for potable water (W270) and natural gas applications, fully compliant with German and European standards.
  • Electric Butterfly Valves – Automated valves with electric actuators for PLC integration, remote control, and building management systems.
  • Pneumatic Butterfly Valves – Fast-acting automated valves with pneumatic actuators, including ATEX-rated options for hazardous areas, DN25 to DN1200.
  • PTFE Butterfly Valves – PTFE-lined valves for aggressive acids, alkalis, solvents, and high-purity processes.
  • Butterfly Valves with Gearbox – Manual handwheel operation for larger nominal sizes where lever operation is not practical.
  • Double-eccentric Butterfly Valves – High-performance valves with metal sealing for higher pressures, temperatures, and demanding process applications.
Both designs mount between pipe flanges, but they do it differently. A wafer butterfly valve is clamped between two flanges using long through-bolts that pass through both flanges and the valve body. It is the more compact and economical choice and is ideal when you always want to isolate a full pipe section. A lug butterfly valve has threaded inserts (lugs) cast into its body. Each side of the pipeline bolts directly and independently into these lugs. This allows one side of the pipeline to be disconnected and removed while the other side remains pressurised – a configuration known as dead-end service. If you need maintenance flexibility or plan to work on sections of pipe without a full system shutdown, lug design is the better option. FERGO offers both designs across all its standard butterfly valve ranges.
The seat or liner is the heart of the butterfly valve – it is in direct contact with your medium and determines chemical compatibility and temperature limits. Here is a quick guide:
  • EPDM – The all-rounder for water, hot water, steam, and mild chemicals. Resistant up to approx. 120 °C. Widely used in HVAC and building services. Not suitable for mineral oils.
  • NBR (Nitrile) – Designed for mineral oil-based media such as hydraulic oil, fuels, and cooling lubricants. Good resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons. Not recommended for hot water or steam.
  • FKM / FPM (Viton®) – Excellent resistance to a wide range of aggressive chemicals, oils, and elevated temperatures. Suitable for more demanding industrial process applications.
  • PTFE (Teflon®) – Near-universal chemical resistance. The first choice for aggressive acids, alkalis, and solvents. Also available as a full PTFE-lined valve – see PTFE Butterfly Valves.
If you are unsure, the FERGO team is happy to advise on media compatibility for your specific application.
Yes – if your application involves natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (propane/butane), or potable drinking water, you are legally required to use valves that carry the relevant DVGW certification. FERGO's DVGW Butterfly Valves hold approvals under DVGW Gas (DIN EN 13774) and DVGW Drinking Water (W270), ensuring full compliance with German and European safety and material standards. These certified valves are available in both wafer and lug design, from DN25 to DN300, with PN6 to PN16 pressure ratings, and can be equipped with hand levers, gearboxes, electric actuators, or pneumatic actuators.
A centric (concentric) butterfly valve has its disc shaft running directly through the centre of the disc and the seat. When the disc closes, it rubs against the seat along the full rotation, which leads to some wear over time. This design is cost-effective and perfectly suitable for standard industrial and building services applications at moderate pressures and temperatures. A double-eccentric (double-offset) butterfly valve has its shaft positioned with two offsets from the disc and seat centreline. This means the disc lifts cleanly away from the seat almost immediately on opening, and seats with a cam-like action on closing – resulting in virtually no rubbing wear. This gives significantly longer service life, better suitability for higher pressures and temperatures, and a tight metal-to-metal seal. FERGO's Double-eccentric Butterfly Valves are the right choice for demanding process engineering, power generation, shipbuilding, and applications where long-term tightness is critical.
Both allow the valve to be operated automatically without manual intervention, but they differ in speed, power source, and ideal use case:
  • Electric Butterfly Valves – Powered by mains electricity (24V, 230V, 240V). They offer precise positioning, easy integration into PLC and building management systems via control signals (0–10V, 4–20mA), and clear position feedback. The ideal choice for building automation, Industry 4.0 environments, and applications requiring modulating control. See Electric Butterfly Valves.
  • Pneumatic Butterfly Valves – Powered by compressed air. They are extremely fast-acting and powerful, making them the preferred choice for quick-cycling processes, emergency shut-down systems, and hazardous (ATEX/Ex) areas where electrical equipment is restricted. Available in single-acting (spring-return, fail-safe) and double-acting variants. See Pneumatic Butterfly Valves.
If compressed air infrastructure is already in place and speed or ATEX compliance matters, pneumatic is the better fit. For smart building integration and precision control, electric actuation is the right choice.
FERGO butterfly valves cover a very wide range of nominal sizes from DN25 (1") up to DN1200 (48"). Available pressure ratings (PN classes) include PN6, PN10, PN16, and ANSI/ASME Class 150, making them compatible with both DIN and imperial flange standards. Sizes and pressure ratings available depend on the specific subcategory – for example, standard Fergo Butterfly Valves and Pneumatic Butterfly Valves cover the full DN25–DN1200 range, while DVGW-certified valves are available from DN25 to DN300. Use the product configurator on this page to filter by nominal width, connection standard, and pressure class to find your exact match.
Ductile iron (GGG40) with epoxy coating is the standard body material for most industrial butterfly valves – it is highly robust, cost-effective, and suitable for the vast majority of water, air, and neutral media applications. You should upgrade to a Stainless Steel Butterfly Valve when your application involves one or more of the following:
  • Corrosive or aggressive process media that would attack iron over time
  • Food, beverage, or pharmaceutical processes where hygiene standards and material compliance are required
  • Outdoor or marine environments where the valve body is exposed to corrosive atmospheres or seawater
  • High-purity applications where iron contamination of the medium is not acceptable
Stainless steel bodies (typically 1.4408 / AISI 316) offer significantly better corrosion resistance and a longer service life in these conditions, while maintaining the same compact, space-saving design.
