Butterfly Valves for Gas: Natural Gas, Methane, Biogas – Each in a Class of Its Own
Gas is not simply 'gas'. Whether it's natural gas, methane, biogas, or something else – each medium tests the material, seals, and design. The DVGW-certified butterfly valve for gas is designed precisely for this.
In practice, models with NBR (Nitrile) sealing liners are noticeably often used here, as they are specifically made for gas applications. They remain leak-tight – even when pressure and temperature fluctuate. Typical pressure ratings like PN10/16 or ASME Class 150 easily cover most industrial networks.
There are also long-established DVGW-tested solutions for newer topics like biogas or gaseous methane. This gives planners and operators clear certainty – for today and later.
Potable Water Butterfly Valves: Hygiene is Not Up for Debate
When it comes to potable water, mere functionality is not enough. Trust plays the main role. Butterfly valves for potable water must be made of materials that do not affect the water, do not leach substances, and remain stable in the long term.
EPDM seals are usually employed here, combined with coated cast iron housings or stainless steel variants. Particularly in aggressive environments or under special hygiene requirements, stainless steel is almost always the safe choice.
The DVGW approval guarantees that these components comply with strict hygiene regulations – a point that is crucial not only during commissioning but also repeatedly during ongoing operation.
Variants, Actuators, Materials – Practical and Flexible
A DVGW butterfly valve is not an off-the-shelf standard product. It can be adapted: as a wafer type, with threaded holes, manual or automated, electrically or pneumatically actuated – the selection adapts to the respective system, not the other way around.
It's similar with materials: Cast iron is suitable for classic applications, stainless steel for more demanding conditions. This variety is not a luxury but simply part of everyday pipeline life.
Safety Without Compromise – DVGW Sets the Standard
Whether for gas or potable water: A DVGW-approved butterfly valve is not a formality. It stands for genuine safety awareness, quality, and responsibility. This makes commissioning less complicated, builds trust in operation, and ensures the technology works reliably even after years.
In other words: Those who rely on DVGW for gas and potable water aren't necessarily making things easy for themselves, but they are definitely doing it right.
Frequently Asked Questions – Butterfly Valves
- Fergo Butterfly Valves – Standard wafer and lug butterfly valves (AK200/AK201) in ductile iron GGG40 with stainless steel disc, available in EPDM, NBR, FKM/FPM, and PTFE seat materials, DN25 to DN1200, PN6/10/16 and ANSI Class 150.
- Stainless Steel Butterfly Valves – Full stainless steel body and disc for corrosive media, food, pharmaceutical, and outdoor applications.
- DVGW Butterfly Valves – Certified valves for potable water (W270) and natural gas applications, fully compliant with German and European standards.
- Electric Butterfly Valves – Automated valves with electric actuators for PLC integration, remote control, and building management systems.
- Pneumatic Butterfly Valves – Fast-acting automated valves with pneumatic actuators, including ATEX-rated options for hazardous areas, DN25 to DN1200.
- PTFE Butterfly Valves – PTFE-lined valves for aggressive acids, alkalis, solvents, and high-purity processes.
- Butterfly Valves with Gearbox – Manual handwheel operation for larger nominal sizes where lever operation is not practical.
- Double-eccentric Butterfly Valves – High-performance valves with metal sealing for higher pressures, temperatures, and demanding process applications.
- EPDM – The all-rounder for water, hot water, steam, and mild chemicals. Resistant up to approx. 120 °C. Widely used in HVAC and building services. Not suitable for mineral oils.
- NBR (Nitrile) – Designed for mineral oil-based media such as hydraulic oil, fuels, and cooling lubricants. Good resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons. Not recommended for hot water or steam.
- FKM / FPM (Viton®) – Excellent resistance to a wide range of aggressive chemicals, oils, and elevated temperatures. Suitable for more demanding industrial process applications.
- PTFE (Teflon®) – Near-universal chemical resistance. The first choice for aggressive acids, alkalis, and solvents. Also available as a full PTFE-lined valve – see PTFE Butterfly Valves.
- Electric Butterfly Valves – Powered by mains electricity (24V, 230V, 240V). They offer precise positioning, easy integration into PLC and building management systems via control signals (0–10V, 4–20mA), and clear position feedback. The ideal choice for building automation, Industry 4.0 environments, and applications requiring modulating control. See Electric Butterfly Valves.
- Pneumatic Butterfly Valves – Powered by compressed air. They are extremely fast-acting and powerful, making them the preferred choice for quick-cycling processes, emergency shut-down systems, and hazardous (ATEX/Ex) areas where electrical equipment is restricted. Available in single-acting (spring-return, fail-safe) and double-acting variants. See Pneumatic Butterfly Valves.
- Corrosive or aggressive process media that would attack iron over time
- Food, beverage, or pharmaceutical processes where hygiene standards and material compliance are required
- Outdoor or marine environments where the valve body is exposed to corrosive atmospheres or seawater
- High-purity applications where iron contamination of the medium is not acceptable
