Wafer and Lug Butterfly Valves - FERGO's Compact Shut-off Solution

Shutting off and controlling flow in pipelines is a real headache if you don't have the right gear. FERGO's wafer and lug butterfly valves aren't just space-savers - they get the job done when you need quick, reliable isolation or control, no matter what you're moving through your lines. From water treatment plants to HVAC, chemical sites, and all-around industrial use, these valves hold up even when things get tough. They're lightweight and barely stick out from the pipe, so they're a lifesaver where space gets tight or when you're flipping them open and shut all the time.

The idea is dead simple: there's a disc inside, and it spins 90 degrees to go from open to shut. That's it - you get a quick switch, barely any pressure loss, and you won't spend all day on maintenance. One thing that sets FERGO valves apart, though, is that they work no matter which way the flow is going (forward or backward). That's a serious plus if things in your plant tend to flip around or change direction. FERGO covers you with a bunch of size, pressure class, and material options, so you're not stuck searching for a fit.

Wafer vs. Lug Butterfly Valves - What's the Difference?

Both types have their moment. Wafer butterfly valves clamp between two pipe flanges and get pinned down with long bolts running through the whole thing. That makes them short, light, and super quick to install - perfect if you just want something simple that doesn't hog space. Lug butterfly valves, on the other hand, have threaded lugs around the body so you can bolt each flange to the valve separately. The big deal? You can use these in "dead-end" setups - disconnect one side of the pipe for work or changes, but the other side still holds pressure. FERGO carries both versions, in all sorts of sizes and setups, so you can match whatever your pipeline calls for.

Frequently Asked Questions – FERGO Butterfly Valves

FERGO offers a comprehensive range of butterfly valves to cover virtually every industrial and building services application: centric wafer and lug butterfly valves (AK200/AK201), double-eccentric butterfly valves for higher pressures, PTFE-lined butterfly valves for aggressive media, DVGW-certified valves for gas and potable water, stainless steel butterfly valves, and fully automated versions with electric or pneumatic actuators. All types are available in a wide range of nominal sizes from DN25 to DN1200.
A wafer butterfly valve (e.g. AK200) fits directly between two pipe flanges and is held in place by through-bolts running across both flanges. It is compact, lightweight, and fast to install. A lug butterfly valve (e.g. AK201) has threaded inserts — the "lugs" — moulded into the valve body. This allows each side to be bolted independently, making it suitable for dead-end service: you can isolate and disconnect one side of the pipeline while the other remains pressurized. Wafer types are not designed for this.
Most standard FERGO butterfly valves are rated for PN6, PN10, and PN16 in accordance with DIN flanges, and are also compatible with ASME/ANSI Class 150 flanges. Higher-pressure applications can be covered by the double-eccentric series. The exact pressure class for each valve is listed in its product specification.
FERGO butterfly valves are available from DN25 (1") all the way up to DN1200 (48"), covering the full range from small instrumentation lines to large industrial or municipal pipelines. The product configurator on the page lets you filter by nominal size to find the right match quickly.
For the valve body, FERGO offers ductile cast iron (GGG40 with epoxy coating 150µm), GGG50, stainless steel (1.4408 / AISI 316), and ASTM A216 WCB steel. For the disc, options include stainless steel (1.4408), stainless steel with PTFE coating, and ductile iron with Resicoat R4 coating. The right combination depends on your medium, operating temperature, and environment.
FERGO butterfly valves are available with the following seat materials:
  • EPDM – Water, heating/cooling circuits, steam up to 120°C, mild chemicals. The standard choice for building services and HVAC.
  • NBR (Nitrile) – Mineral oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
  • FKM/FPM (Viton®) – Aggressive chemicals, oils, and elevated temperatures requiring high chemical resistance.
  • PTFE (Teflon®) – Highly aggressive acids, alkalis, solvents, and high-purity processes. Near-universal chemical resistance.
  • RPTFE – Reinforced PTFE for improved mechanical stability in demanding applications.
  • INCONEL 718 – For extreme temperature and high-pressure applications.
Yes. FERGO offers a dedicated range of DVGW-certified butterfly valves (e.g. AK210G and AK211G series) approved for use with natural gas, LPG (propane/butane), and potable water (W270). These are available in both wafer and lug designs and are fully compliant with German and European standards including DIN EN 13774. They are the required choice for utility companies, gas installers, and facility managers working on certified pipelines.
Depending on the valve model and configuration, FERGO butterfly valves are available with the following certifications and approvals: DVGW Gas (DIN EN 13774), DVGW Drinking Water (W270), TA Luft (for emissions-relevant applications in Germany), SIL 3 (for safety-instrumented systems), and FDA (for food and pharmaceutical contact applications).
FERGO butterfly valves can be supplied with a full range of actuation options to suit manual and automated applications:
  • Hand lever – Simple manual operation for occasional use.
  • Gearbox (handwheel) – For larger nominal sizes where lever operation becomes impractical.
  • Electric actuator – For integration into building management or industrial control systems (PLC, 0–10V, 4–20mA). Available in 24V, 230V, and 240V variants.
  • Pneumatic actuator – Fast-switching and safe for ATEX/Ex hazardous areas. Available in single-acting (spring-return, fail-safe) and double-acting versions.
  • Free shaft – For connecting your own actuator or third-party drive units.
A double-acting pneumatic actuator uses compressed air to both open and close the valve — it requires air supply in both directions. A single-acting (spring-return) actuator uses air pressure to move in one direction and a spring to return to the fail-safe position when air supply is lost. Single-acting variants are used when a defined fail-safe position (open or closed) is required in the event of a power or air failure — for example, in emergency shut-down systems.
Standard centric butterfly valves are ideal for most general-purpose applications at PN6–PN16. Double-eccentric butterfly valves are the better choice when you need higher pressure ratings, longer service life, lower operating torque, or a metal-seated seal. They are commonly used in demanding sectors such as chemical processing, power generation, and shipbuilding, and are particularly suited for hot water, saturated steam, heating oil, and applications with frequent cycling.
PTFE-lined butterfly valves are the right choice when the medium is chemically aggressive — such as concentrated acids, alkalis, or solvents — or when process purity is critical, as in pharmaceutical or semiconductor production. The full PTFE lining protects the valve body from corrosion and prevents contamination of the medium. Standard rubber-seated valves are not suitable for these applications.
Yes. Both wafer and lug butterfly valves from FERGO support bi-directional flow — they seal equally well in either flow direction. This makes them suitable for systems where flow direction may vary or reverse depending on operating conditions, without any loss of sealing performance.
The product configurator on this page lets you filter the full range of over 1,000 models by nominal size (DN25–DN1200), connection standard (PN6, PN10, PN16, ANSI Class 150), design (wafer, lug, or double offset), seat material (EPDM, NBR, FKM, PTFE, RPTFE, INCONEL), body material, disc material, actuation type, and certification. Select your requirements step by step to narrow down the right product. If you are unsure, the FERGO technical team is available to assist.
The majority of standard FERGO butterfly valves in the most common sizes and configurations are kept in stock and available for immediate dispatch. Availability is shown directly on each product listing. For large quantities, special configurations, or certified variants, please contact FERGO directly for a delivery time confirmation.
Yes. FERGO's team is available for technical consultation to help you select the right valve type, material, size, and actuation for your specific application. You can reach them by phone at +49 21 31 / 15 39 28-0 or by email at shop@fergo-valve.com.
