Flanged shut-off valves are used because of their robustness, easy installation and suitability for various pipe sizes and pressure ranges. In Europe, DIN 2501 with pressure classes PN10/16/25/40 and ASME Class 150/300 are the most commonly used flange standards. Due to standardized sizes, pressure classes and material specifications, they are safer and compatible in pipelines of different pressure classes. Depending on the application, a shut-off valve with a gland packing or a bellows is used.

Frequently Asked Questions – Globe Valves
A globe valve (shut-off valve) uses a disc or cone that moves linearly along the valve axis, perpendicular to the flow. The stem is raised or lowered by rotating a handwheel, pushing the disc into or lifting it off an annular seat in the valve body. This gives the globe valve a set of distinct operating characteristics:
- Precise throttling capability: Unlike ball or gate valves, which are optimised for fully open or fully closed positions, the globe valve can be set to any intermediate position between fully open and fully closed, giving accurate, stable flow control at partial opening
- Reliable bubble-tight shut-off: The disc seats against a precision-machined metal seat (typically hardened stainless steel); tightness class A per EN 12266-1 across the range
- Multi-turn actuation: The stem requires multiple rotations from fully open to fully closed – slower to operate than a quarter-turn valve, but providing more gradual, controllable flow changes
- Rising stem with visible position indication: The stem rises as the valve opens; its position above the handwheel gives direct visual confirmation of the open/closed state without any additional indicator
- Higher pressure drop than gate or ball valves: The S-shaped internal flow path creates more resistance than a full-bore valve; globe valves are therefore not selected where minimising pressure drop is the primary criterion

- Bellows shut-off valves (Faltenbalg) – The stem is sealed by a multi-layer welded metal bellows (X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 / SS316Ti), which completely eliminates stem leakage. Body: grey cast iron EN-GJL-250 (PN16, max. +300°C), carbon steel 1.0619 (PN40, max. +450°C), or stainless steel 1.4408/CF8M (PN10–40, −60°C to +400°C). Cone: 1.4021 (X20Cr13 + QT), hardened, 360° freely rotating. Seat: stainless steel, hardened surfaces. Packing rings: graphite (backup seal). Multiple body material options: carbon steel 1.0619 (VG215F: PN40, max. +450°C), stainless steel 1.4408/CF8M (VG450: PN16/40, max. +400°C), and high-performance steel P250GH/1.0460 (PERSTA 200AE21.1: PN10–40). All with rising handwheel stem; actuatable. Sizes: DN15–DN300; connection EN 1092-1 form B1; length EN 558-1 series 1. Certifications: TA Luft, AD2000-A4, PED 2014/68/EU, NACE (VG450).
The fundamental difference between the two globe valve types is how the stem is sealed against leakage to atmosphere:

- The multi-layer welded SS316Ti bellows forms a hermetic seal between the stem and the environment. Even if the gland packing (secondary seal) fails entirely, the bellows prevents any leakage. This makes the bellows valve the design of choice for:
- Toxic or hazardous media: Chlorine, phosgene, ammonia, HF, HCl, and other chemicals where any atmospheric release is dangerous to personnel or the environment
- Valuable or high-purity media: Expensive process gases, ultra-pure fluids, or isotopes where even trace losses are economically significant
- Mandatory TA Luft / ISO 15848-1 compliance: German and EU environmental regulations for industrial plants specify maximum permissible fugitive emissions from valve stems. Bellows valves achieve the highest tightness class (class A, EN 12266-1) and fully satisfy TA Luft at temperatures from −60°C to +450°C
- Steam and condensate systems: Leakage from hot steam lines is both a safety hazard and an energy waste; bellows sealing eliminates both
- The graphite packing is a robust, field-replaceable seal that performs reliably at up to +450°C (VG215F carbon steel) or +400°C (VG450 stainless steel)
- Graphite packing is itself TA Luft-compliant – it meets the fugitive emission limits of ISO 15848-1 when correctly installed and maintained
- More economical than bellows valves; packing can be re-tensioned or replaced in the field without removing the valve from the line
- The correct choice when the medium is not hazardous (steam, water, non-toxic oils, neutral gases) and when the higher capital cost of a bellows valve is not justified

When is TA Luft mandatory?
- All valves installed in plant sections handling substances classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic (CMR substances) under German BImSchG / 4th BImSchV
- Valves handling flammable or toxic gases in German refineries, chemical plants, and processing facilities covered by TA Luft 2021
- Any plant requiring a German BImSchG operating permit (Genehmigungspflichtiger Betrieb) where valve fugitive emissions contribute to the permitted total emission figure
- Increasingly specified as a quality standard in international EPC projects, even outside Germany, particularly for hazardous media service
- All bellows shut-off valves – TA Luft per ISO 15848-1; tightness class A; the highest possible standard
- Graphite gland packing valves (VG215F, VG450) – TA Luft per ISO 15848-1; graphite packing with SS304+graphite body seal meets the fugitive emission limits

Globe valves are the valve of choice wherever precise shut-off, throttling, or fugitive emission control is required. Key industries and applications:
- Steam systems and power generation: Steam shut-off and throttling at all pressures from PN16 to PN40; superheated steam (carbon steel PN40, max. +450°C); condensate return lines; turbine bypass and drain valves. Bellows sealing eliminates steam leakage completely.
- Chemical and petrochemical processing: Shut-off of aggressive, toxic, or flammable media where TA Luft / ISO 15848-1 compliance is mandatory; stainless steel CF8M bodies for corrosion resistance; bellows sealing for zero stem emissions on hazardous media.
- Oil and gas / refining: Process line isolation and throttling; NACE MR0175/MR0103 certified materials for sour service (H₂S); Fire Safe certification (EN ISO 10497) for fire-risk zones; ASME Class 150/300 configurations on request.
- Pharmaceutical and food & beverage: Stainless steel 1.4408 bodies and internals for hygienic service; CIP/SIP compatibility; steam sterilisation at elevated pressure and temperature.
- Water treatment and utilities: High-cycle shut-off and control of process water, cooling water, and chemical dosing lines; graphite packing valves in cast iron or carbon steel for cost-effective utility service at standard PN ratings.
- HVAC and building services: Heating and cooling circuit isolation; steam control on district heating systems; high-temperature water (HTW) at PN16.

- Throttling or flow regulation is required alongside isolation – the disc can be set to any intermediate position for stable, precise flow control
- Fugitive emissions compliance (TA Luft / ISO 15848-1) is mandatory – both bellows and graphite packing globe valves are certified; bellows provides the highest tightness class
- High temperature and pressure service (PN40, up to +450°C) where multi-turn actuation, positive metal-to-metal seating, and robust stem sealing are required
- Frequent cycling – globe valves tolerate high cycle frequencies better than gate valves; the disc seats and unseats cleanly without jamming or wedging
- Pressure drop across the valve is acceptable – globe valves have higher Kv resistance than gate or ball valves due to the S-shaped internal flow path
- The valve is operated infrequently (fully open most of the time, closed only for maintenance or isolation)
- Minimum pressure drop is critical – gate valves are full bore with straight-through flow when fully open
- Large nominal sizes (DN200–DN600) where globe valves become unwieldy and expensive
- DVGW certification for drinking water or gas is required
- Fast quarter-turn operation is required – ball valves open and close in 90° vs. multiple turns for globe valves
- Small to medium sizes (DN8–DN150) where ball valves are compact, cost-effective, and bubble-tight at full bore
- Automation via pneumatic or electric actuator – quarter-turn actuation is simpler, faster, and cheaper to automate than multi-turn
- Temperature is below the limits of PTFE/TFM seat materials (typically <+180°C) and PN40 is not required
