Rubber Expansion Joint

A rubber expansion joint is a flexible pipe connection that absorbs movements, vibrations, and thermal expansions, reduces noise, and compensates for misalignments. Expansion joints are essential components in many industries, not only to protect facilities but also to extend the service life of systems and reduce thermal, mechanical, and pressure deviations in pipeline networks. Rubber expansion joints are typically made of elastic materials such as EPDM, NBR, Hypalon, or other materials depending on the application and environment, and reinforced with fabric layers or metal rings. Their use ensures safer and quieter operation, making them a valuable solution for numerous industrial applications.

Rubber Expansion Joints: Safety and Efficiency for Your Pipeline System

Rubber expansion joints absorb the various movements that occur in pipeline systems due to temperature changes. When pipelines heat up or cool down, expansions and contractions occur, which the rubber expansion joint compensates for, protecting the system from damage and stress. For this purpose, elastic materials are the best choice. EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer) and NBR (nitrile-butadiene rubber) are among the most popular materials with specific properties. EPDM offers excellent resistance to extreme temperatures, UV radiation, ozone, and weathering, making it ideal for outdoor use and challenging weather conditions. Its resistance to hot water, steam, and aging makes it suitable for water supply, HVAC systems, and industrial pipelines. However, it should not be used with oil- or petroleum-based products. On the other hand, NBR is resistant to oils, fuels, and other petroleum-based products. This material is widely used in chemical processing plants and industrial applications where systems transport oil or hydrocarbons. Due to its durability and wear resistance, it is preferred for applications involving oils, fats, and solvents. FERGO has been supplying high-quality and cost-effective expansion joints to satisfied customers across Europe for many years. Our most popular models, OG111, OG130, and OG150, are highly valued not only for their variety of rubber options but also for their flexible sizes and adjustable lengths, which can be tailored to meet specific requirements.

Rotatable Flanges in Rubber Expansion Joints: Stainless Steel and Galvanized Steel Flanges

Flange expansion joints with rotatable flanges offer greater flexibility during installation and allow precise alignment with connected pipelines. Unlike fixed flanges, rotatable flanges can rotate around the joint body, enabling accurate adjustments without moving the pipe. This simplifies installation, saves labor, and ensures a reliable seal. Choosing the right flange material provides optimal performance, durability, and compatibility with your operational requirements. Stainless steel flanges are ideal for applications where corrosion resistance is critical, particularly in aggressive environments such as chemical processing, marine systems, and wastewater treatment. These flanges provide a long service life with minimal risk of rust or damage. Galvanized steel flanges are more cost-effective and suitable for systems where high corrosion resistance is not essential. Typical applications include HVAC systems, water distribution, and industrial pipelines. While less corrosion-resistant than stainless steel, steel flanges are robust and can be used in various non-corrosive or technically less demanding environments. At FERGO, we supply both OG150 and OG130 rubber expansion joints with stainless steel or galvanized steel flanges, rated for DIN PN10/16, covering a wide range of applications.

Frequently Asked Questions – Rubber Expansion Joints

A rubber expansion joint (also called a rubber compensator, flexible pipeline connector, or vibration isolator) is a flexible pipe connection element made of elastomeric materials – typically EPDM, NBR, or Hypalon – reinforced with textile cord fabric and metal rings, and installed between two pipeline flanges or threaded connections. It simultaneously performs several critical functions in a pipeline system:
  • Movement compensation: Axial (longitudinal), lateral (transverse), and angular movements in the pipeline are absorbed by the elastic sphere or convolution of the compensator body, without transmitting rigid stresses into the pipe structure
  • Thermal expansion: Pipelines expand and contract with temperature changes; the expansion joint absorbs these thermally induced length changes and prevents pipe buckling, flange leakage, and bearing failure
  • Vibration damping: Pumps, compressors, and fans generate mechanical vibrations; the elastomeric compensator body decouples the vibrating machine from the pipeline network and protects valves, instruments, and adjacent components from fatigue caused by sustained vibration
  • Noise / structure-borne sound isolation: The rubber-metal construction interrupts the structure-borne sound path between machine and pipeline effectively – a major contribution to quiet building services and pump rooms
  • Misalignment compensation: Minor alignment errors between two pipe axes (parallel offset, angular misalignment) can be absorbed by the expansion joint without prestress; simplifies installation and reduces flange bending moments
  • Corrosion protection: The elastomer body is a non-metallic material resistant to the process fluid; no galvanic corrosion, no rust perforation
Rubber expansion joints are therefore essential components in virtually all liquid-carrying pipeline systems – from drinking water supply and HVAC to process chemistry and industrial utilities.
FERGO offers three basic designs, differing in movement capacity, face-to-face length, and connection type:

Rubber expansion joint – single sphere (flanged, PN10/PN16):
  • Construction: Single-sphere elastomer body (EPDM or NBR) with textile cord reinforcement, vulcanised to flanges on both ends (galvanised steel or stainless steel)
  • Movement capacity: Axial, lateral, and angular; medium to large spring travel depending on nominal size
  • Sizes: DN32 – DN500; pressure ratings PN10 and PN16
  • Flanges per EN 1092-1; direct installation between standard flange pairs
  • Typical applications: Pump stations; industrial water supply; cooling water lines; district heating; refrigeration; chemical process plants
Rubber expansion joint – double sphere (flanged, PN10/PN16):
  • Construction: Two elastomeric spheres in one common body; flanges on both ends (galvanised steel or stainless steel)
  • Movement capacity: Significantly higher axial, lateral, and angular spring travel than the single-sphere design; lower reaction forces on pipe supports
  • Sizes: DN32 – DN500; pressure ratings PN10 and PN16
  • Typical applications: Plants with large temperature variations; systems with heavy vibration; installation situations requiring high axial travel or large parallel offset; wherever a single-sphere compensator cannot absorb sufficient movement
Rubber pipe connector – double convolution (threaded BSPP):
  • Construction: Double-convolution elastomeric body with threaded female stubs on both ends (BSPP / BSP) in brass or stainless steel; compact face-to-face length
  • Connection: Female thread BSPP; sizes DN20 (¾") – DN50 (2")
  • Typical applications: HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning); small-bore pump stations; water treatment; building services; wherever flanged connections are not available and threaded connection is preferred; excellent structure-borne sound isolation between pump and pipeline
Vacuum ring option: Available for all three designs; a metal support cage inside the compensator body prevents the elastomer from collapsing under negative pressure (vacuum systems, suction side of pumps).
Choosing the correct elastomer is the most important selection decision for a rubber expansion joint, since the compensator body is in continuous direct contact with the process fluid:

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer):
  • Media compatibility: Water (drinking water, hot water to +140°C short-term), steam, dilute acids, alkalis, ketones, alcohols; excellent resistance to weathering, ozone, and UV
  • Temperature range: −40°C to +120°C continuous (short-term to +140°C)
  • Not suitable for: Mineral oils, fuels, hydrocarbons, concentrated acids
  • Preferred use: Drinking water (check WRAS/KTW approval); heating and HVAC systems; cooling towers; district heating; steam systems; fresh water lines; by far the most common material for general water applications
NBR (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber, nitrile rubber):
  • Media compatibility: Mineral oils, hydraulic oils, lubricants, fuels (petrol, diesel, kerosene), aliphatic hydrocarbons; moderate resistance to dilute acids and alkalis
  • Temperature range: −30°C to +100°C continuous
  • Not suitable for: Hot water/steam, ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, strong acids
  • Preferred use: Fuel lines; hydraulic systems; lubricant supply; compressor plants; engine cooling systems with glycol antifreeze
Hypalon / CSM (Chlorosulphonated Polyethylene):
  • Media compatibility: Very good resistance to concentrated acids (hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric), oxidising agents (bleach solutions, H₂O₂), ozone, UV; good weathering resistance
  • Temperature range: −25°C to +120°C
  • Preferred use: Chemical and petrochemical plants with aggressive acids; wastewater treatment with chemical dosing; swimming pool water technology (chlorinated water)
Flange material: Standard galvanised steel flange for water and neutral media; stainless steel flange (1.4301 or 1.4404) for chemically aggressive environments, outdoor installation in marine climates, or wherever corrosion resistance of the flange itself is required.
The FERGO range covers 163 expansion joint variants with the following selection parameters:

Nominal sizes:
  • Threaded connection (BSPP): DN20 (¾") – DN50 (2")
  • Flanged connection PN10/PN16: DN32 (1¼") – DN500 (20")
Pressure ratings (flanged versions):
  • PN10: Max. operating pressure 10 bar (1.0 MPa) at nominal temperature; for general water applications, refrigeration systems, low-pressure process lines
  • PN16: Max. operating pressure 16 bar (1.6 MPa); for heating systems, district heating, pressure-bearing industrial pipelines; the most widely used pressure rating for industrial applications
Important installation notes:
  • Face-to-face length: Rubber expansion joints have a defined face-to-face dimension per nominal size and design type; the pipeline must be cut or extended accordingly – always check the catalogue dimension
  • Thrust restraint (safety chain / tie rods): Under internal pressure, an unrestrained expansion joint experiences a thrust force that tries to pull it apart (pressure thrust); for larger sizes or higher pressures, tie rods or safety chains are required to absorb this force and relieve the pipe supports
  • Installation orientation: Horizontal and vertical installation possible; in vertical installation, the weight of the pipeline must be carried by suitable slide supports, not by the expansion joint itself
  • Minimum straight pipe distance: Maintain at least 1× nominal diameter of straight pipe on each side of the expansion joint so it can utilise its full movement capacity unobstructed
  • Vacuum applications: Without a vacuum ring, the elastomer body will collapse under negative pressure; order the vacuum ring variant or retrofit as required
Pumps are the most common cause of damage to pipeline fittings, instruments, and flange gaskets – not from static pressure, but from the dynamic forces generated during operation:

Sources of pump-induced stress:
  • Mechanical vibrations: Every rotating pump generates periodic vibrations through mass imbalance, cavitation, and hydrodynamic forces; without decoupling, these are transmitted as structure-borne sound throughout the entire pipeline and building structure
  • Pressure pulsations: Piston and dosing pumps generate pressure pulsations with each stroke; these pressure waves propagate through the pipeline and can cause resonance effects and pipe fractures
  • Thermal expansion: The pump casing heats up during operation and expands; the pipeline must accommodate this expansion without inducing stress into the pump flange (shaft misalignment, bearing wear)
  • Start-up surges: When a pump starts, temporarily elevated pressures and torque spikes load the pipeline abruptly
Effect of the rubber expansion joint:
  • The elastomeric body forms an acoustic and mechanical decoupling point between the pump and the pipeline network; structure-borne sound transmission is typically reduced by 15–30 dB
  • Vibration amplitudes are absorbed by the elastomeric body – pressure fluctuations from pulsation are attenuated by the elastic wall
  • Thermal expansion of the pump is accommodated within the axial spring travel of the compensator, without transferring forces to the flange connection
  • Assembly tolerance compensation: Minor angular misalignment between the pump flange and pipe axis can be absorbed by the elasticity of the compensator – reducing assembly-induced forces on the pump bearings
Recommendation: One expansion joint on both the suction and discharge side of each pump; for variable speed drives (VFD), check for resonance frequencies and consider a double-sphere compensator with higher damping capacity.
The double-convolution rubber pipe connectors with BSPP female thread are the compact, ready-to-connect solution for smaller nominal sizes (DN20–DN50) and wherever flanged pipelines are not available:

Construction features:
  • Double-convolution elastomeric body (EPDM or NBR) for high axial and lateral movement absorption in a compact face-to-face length
  • Female threaded stubs on both ends with BSPP female thread (ISO 228-1 / BSP G-thread); direct screwed connection without flange assembly
  • Threaded stubs in brass (for neutral media such as water, glycol) or stainless steel (for aggressive media or outdoor installation)
  • Retaining clips (clamps or locking rings) prevent unintentional unscrewing under pressure drop or vacuum
Main applications:
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC): At circulation pumps in heating distributors and refrigeration systems; suppression of pump noise in residential buildings, offices, and hotels; easy installation into existing threaded pipework without welding
  • Water treatment: At dosing and transfer pumps; pulsation decoupling; protection of membrane filters and membrane systems from pressure surges
  • Building services: At booster pump sets; fire suppression systems; heat pumps; solar thermal pump stations
  • Industry (small sizes): At laboratory dosing systems; cooling circuits of small machines; hydraulic control units
Installation note: Screw the pipe connector in hand-tight, then carefully tighten with a suitable pipe wrench (chain wrench); do not twist or overstretch the elastomeric body; check all threaded connections for leaks at first pressure test.
The vacuum ring (also called a vacuum support ring or internal retaining ring) is a ring-shaped metal cage or support ring built into the interior of the expansion joint's elastomeric body. It is a necessary additional feature for all expansion joints used in negative pressure applications:

Why does an expansion joint collapse without a vacuum ring?
  • The elastomeric compensator body is designed to maintain its shape stably under internal overpressure – the internal pressure supports the wall from inside
  • Under negative pressure (vacuum), the pressure differential reverses: atmospheric pressure outside is higher than the internal pressure; the flexible wall of the compensator is pressed inward and can buckle to a complete cross-section restriction (collapse) – the flow cross-section is severely reduced or fully blocked
Function of the vacuum ring:
  • The internal metal support ring forms a rigid skeleton that resists the external atmospheric pressure mechanically and keeps the internal cross-section of the compensator open even at full vacuum (0 bar absolute)
  • The elastomeric movement properties (axial, lateral, angular) are fully retained; only the collapse is prevented
Typical applications requiring the vacuum ring:
  • Suction side of centrifugal pumps: At high geodetic suction head or rapidly closing shut-off devices on the suction side, short-term negative pressure can develop
  • Vacuum systems: Vacuum pumps, vacuum conveyors, vacuum chambers in pharmaceutical and food technology
  • Unpressurised drainage lines: Pipelines without operating pressure that experience negative pressure from siphon or syphon effects
  • Steam condensate systems: Negative pressures can occur briefly in condensing zones
All FERGO expansion joints are available in the vacuum ring version – select the option in the online configurator or contact us for project-specific advice.
